Saturday: After 8:00 am Mass
The Fifth Sunday of Lent
Through out the ages, whether one’s radicalism is good or bad seems to be in the eye of the beholder. To the Apostles and to His disciples, Jesus was radically good. To Herod, and Caiaphas, and the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus was radically bad. It all goes to show how dangerous it is to label people or ideas. Labelling is subjective. Each and every time that we label someone or something, we are making a judgment based on our own perspective and opinion. Of course, we are entitled to our opinions, so long as they are noted to be opinions and not statements of fact. But facts seem to be something that are in very short supply nowadays. All we seem to hear in the media today are opinions; unfortunately, opinions often masquerading as facts. The term “fake news” comes to mind. Traditional journalism has been turned on its head. Journalism is now more commentary and propaganda. Journal- ism once sought out “Who, what, where, and when?” Questions that could be answered using nouns and verbs – i.e., facts. Today the news is rife with adjectives and adverbs, and, above all, labelling– i.e., opinions.
We must be careful that while much “radical” thinking and rhetoric from both the left and the right we may find personally distasteful or objectionable, the constitutional rights of persons on both sides to both freedom of speech and religious liberty must still be protected. Actions may be criminal, but rarely should content be crimi- nal.
We are very close - within $3,000 - of meeting our $74,000 goal for this year’s Bishop’s Appeal. Many thanks to the 200+ families who have contributed or made pledges to date. That being said, we have about 500 families who regularly attend Sunday Mass.
If you have already contributed for this year, we thank you for your generosity. If you have not, please prayerfully consider what you might be able to comfortably contribute. Every little bit helps. If every registered parishioner gave just $40, we would meet our goal. Because of the generosity of those who have already contributed, if every regular Mass attending family who has not yet donated this year gave just $40, we would meet our parish goal. For your convenience, envelopes have been inserted in this week’s Bulletin. They can be placed in the collection baskets, mailed to or left with the parish office, or mailed directly to the Diocese. To make giving a little easier, you can make a pledge and then pay it over time. Thank you in advance for your generosity. God bless
